Becoming an Independent Thinker: Your Success Depends On It

October 30, 2018

“I just do what I’m told.”

That’s what one of the people in a business coaching group I’m part of said recently, and as soon as I heard it, I knew I had to do a podcast episode about it.

Blindly following along with what someone else tells you to do without stopping to use common sense, check in with yourself, and see if it’s the right fit for you is a mistake.

You need to be able to do the work and stand on your own two feet, in every respect.

DO ask for help.  DON’T go along with everything you’re told without questioning if it’s right for YOU.

This might seem counter-intuitive coming from me as a coach, but this is my entire point.  I don’t want you to do every single thing I suggest without learning whether or not it’s working for you.  I’m simply a guide.

My goal is to help you find your confidence, to trust in your own abilities and recognize that you don’t need to have your hand held forever.  It takes practice, but you will be able to use what you learn in the long haul, on those days when no one else is around to make a decision for you.

YOUR CIRCLE OF INFLUENCE

It’s said that you’re the result of the 5 people you spend the most time with.  How will you ever be able to level up if you aren’t capable of deciphering what works for you and what doesn’t?

THIS ATTITUDE IS WHY PEOPLE FAIL.

Look, it’s scary when we’re new at something.  Feels like too much to handle, it’s easier to listen to others.  That’s ok when we’re just learning, but it can also be a downside.

Anyone struggling with imposter syndrome knows this: that tiny voice in the back of your head that tells you to do something other than what’s in front of you, but you shove it down because you don’t believe that you know enough.

You are enough.

Moreover, you can learn to become an independent thinker.  Because your success depends on it.

How?

  1. Listen to your gut
  2. Try it on for size for a reasonable length of time.  There’s a difference between blindly doing something forever and giving up after 2 minutes.
  3. Test out a different way of doing something.

AUDIT YOUR NUTRITION & LIFESTYLE

I’m offering a handful of FREE 30 minute callsto help you get super clear on why you feel like you’re spinning your wheels when it comes to your health.

You jump from diet to diet, promise yourself that this week will be different, attempt to eliminate entire food groups and end up feeling like you have no self control when it comes to food and willpower.

Stop waiting for someone to give you permission, or for the “right time,” whatever that looks like.  There’s no better time than right now, and that way you have new habits you can practice over the holidays and start the new year feeling better than ever, rather than bloated and guilty.

You deserve this.  You deserve to learn how to figure out what your body is trying to tell you and think for yourself.
