The Fear of Success is Real: Everything Has a Price

November 7, 2019

I have a confession to make: I’ve been hiding.

Much as it might seem as though I’ve been putting myself out there more than ever, and I have been, I’ve also struggled with crushing levels of resistance to everything that I want to do and know that I am capable of accomplishing the past couple of months in particular.

Leveraging my own extremely personal story into the spotlight has been daunting, and with that has brought a great deal of fear around all of the potential new issues and expectations that can come with that, along with hitting new levels of success.

Everyone has a wildly different definition of success, but many times what stops us from reaching it is the fear of everything that can come with it.

We’re often going to feel resistance come up.  Steven Pressfield in The War of Art refers to Resistance as its’ own entity, something that will always appear when we’re doing some new, something worth doing.  This is because our brains are trained to keep us comfortable, and doing something new is going to push you to new levels which can be very dangerous from an evolutionary standpoint.

There can be competing factors and stories in our own heads, such as:

Can you have a successful biz AND a happy, loving, committed relationship?

Can you have the career you dream of AND be a great mom?

Is it possible to have the success you dream of and still maintain your current friendships, relationships & lifestyle?

To quote one of my coaches Emma Tait, “it’s allowed to be easy.”  Sometimes we have to remind ourselves of this to remember that everything doesn’t have to be as difficult as we make it out to be in our imaginations.

We’re talking about all of this and more, including:

  • The fear of expectations and what comes with hitting new levels of success
  • Avoiding the work we both need and want to be doing
  • Self-sabotaging ourselves without even realizing it
  • The positive and the negative potential prices that can come with any degree of success
